Dr. Joseph M. Helms

Dr. Helms

Dr. Helms is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and the UCLA School of Medicine. He studied acupuncture in Paris at the French Medical Acupuncture Association, with advanced studies in Germany and England.

Dr. Helms is founding president of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and director of Helms Medical Institute (HMI). He has served as consultant to the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, and to the White House medical clinic. He is clinical professor of medical acupuncture on the adjunct faculty of Stanford Medical School.

Dr. Helms is the author of Acupuncture Energetics, the standard textbook for medical acupuncture in North America, and a recent book for the public Getting To Know You:  A Physician Explains How Acupuncture Helps You Be The Best YOU.

For three decades the Helms Medical Institute has been promoting a transformation in medicine in the United States by training 6,000 physicians in the science and art of medical acupuncture. This emerging discipline in American medicine is an elegant synthesis of classical acupuncture and contemporary western biomedicine. It combines the two medical traditions into a medical approach that can make sense out of a lot of the complaints and concerns that are difficult to address with one approach alone.
